The field of real estate offers a range of career opportunities. When you are a real estate professional, you can help a lot of people buy and sell properties – whether it’s residential, commercial, or industrial. You can also choose to be involved in land development, property management, mortgage banking, and more.
So what does one need to be a realtor?
First of all, you have to know that are educational and licensing requirements established by provincial regulators. You’ll be required to attain a minimum educational level. You also need to complete a period of supervised training before you can register as a real estate professional. While licensing requirements vary from region to region, all provinces require brokers and salespeople to ace a written exam.
There are universities and colleges that offer a number of real estate courses. They allow students to specialize in a program leading to a bachelor’s degree in real estate. There are also graduate level courses. Some provinces require continuing education while others need their real estate professionals to stay updated on the latest industry developments and trends.
Indeed, real estate sales can be a rewarding career. But you have to be realistic about your expectations.
Successful realtors may make it look easy, but really, what you are seeing is the fruits of their efforts and investments. It’s a tough competition out there and you always have to stand out.
Realtors invest in their careers. Getting licensed costs them a lot – and that’s just the beginning. Realtors also have to invest in marketing, a good car, and other costs that can run up your credit line until you begin to make some money.
Of course, once you start earning money, you’ll be sharing that with your brokerage and CRA.
Having said that, still, real estate is a fabulous industry to be working in and if you’ve got the money and the time to invest, you can really make it big.
Know that there are various brokerage models in the market and the commissions for agents may range from 60% to 100% for agents. New agents often do not immediately get paid a high commission. Some brokerages offer free training while there are others that make you pay for your own training. Like in any other field, you always have a choice. For instance, you can choose the brokerage you want to join (given that they want you on their team, too!). It’s also up to you how much you want to work on your career! Indeed, the adage “you reap what you sow” is perfect for realtors.
